Water Desalination
Problem
As the world’s population grows, urbanization increases, and climate change disrupts traditional water sources, the demand for freshwater is rising sharply. Many regions, especially arid and drought-prone areas, face severe shortages of clean water for drinking, agriculture, and industry. Water desalination is a solution to this, but faces challenges in the form of high energy consumption and cost.
Solution
Novel approaches to water desalination often involve the design of new membrane materials. Quantum computing can be used to study water-ion separation mechanisms and develop next-gen membrane materials (e.g., MOFs, COFs) for selective ion filtering.
Impact
Improving membrane materials has the potential to significantly enhance the overall transport of water across membranes, potentially improving the efficiency of desalination processes. Through this, water desalination can play a bigger part in increasing global water security.
