Modelling Ecological Flow Networks

Problem

Agrifood and ecological systems rely on complex flow networks (e.g., nutrient, water or supply chain movement). Determining the maximum flow rate subject to fixed capacities is a critical but computationally demanding optimization problem.

Solution

The maximum flow problem can be precisely formulated as a QUBO problem and could be solved rapidly using a quantum annealer.

Impact

This could allow for swift identification of the highest sustainable throughput for resources (water/logistics). Consequently, planning and managing agricultural inputs and outputs could become more efficient.
