Detecting Ice/Water Mass Change, Water Movement and Ocean Circulation

Problem

Continuously and accurately measuring the movement of Earth’s water and changes in water storage with high resolution is a challenge. Current methods may have limitations in sensitivity and resolution for detailed mapping.

Solution

Quantum gravity gradiometers using atom interferometry can offer significantly higher resolution in measuring gravitational changes related to mass movement, including water, compared to existing technologies.

Impact

Improved monitoring of water body movement and changes in water storage can lead to a better understanding of water systems, potentially enhancing climate resilience and resource management
